Three Ways to Feel Truly Understood and Improve Your Relationships

Feeling understood can be a transformative experience, one that impacts both our mental health and our relationships. But what does it really mean to be understood? How do we recognize it, and how can we foster this in our own connections with others? In this post, we’ll explore three key ways to feel truly understood and why it matters for your overall well-being.

1. Reflect on How You Experience Being Understood

Think about a time when you truly felt understood by someone. How did that experience feel? What did the other person do to create that sense of connection? Often, it’s not just about the words they used — it’s about their body language, posture, or facial expressions. Did they offer a comforting presence, validate your feelings, or simply listen without interruption?

Understanding how you personally experience feeling seen and heard is essential. For some, this might include receiving words of encouragement or supportive feedback. For others, physical touch or gestures may play a key role. The more you can identify what helps you feel understood, the better you can communicate these needs in your relationships.

2. Pay Attention to Emotional Attunement

Emotional attunement is another important aspect of feeling understood. This means that someone is in tune with your emotional state — they “get” what you’re feeling, even if they don’t necessarily share your experience. When we feel emotionally attuned to, it can feel like the other person is right there with us in our experience, offering support without judgment.

Ask yourself, “How do I like to be emotionally supported?” Do you appreciate verbal affirmations or just a listening ear? Understanding your own preferences for emotional support can help you communicate them more clearly in your relationships. The more we explore what we need to feel understood, the more we can foster that connection with others.

3. Practice Listening to Understand, Not to Respond

One of the most crucial steps in feeling understood is also one of the hardest — listening to understand, rather than listening to respond. In today’s world, many conversations are focused on sharing opinions or advice. While sharing thoughts is important, it can also create disconnection if we’re not truly tuning in to what the other person is expressing.

When we listen to understand, we’re fully present with the other person, trying to grasp their perspective, even if we don’t necessarily agree with it. This kind of active listening helps to create a deeper bond and shows the other person that you value their emotions and experiences. It’s this practice of understanding that strengthens our connections and reduces feelings of loneliness or isolation.

Why Being Understood Matters

Feeling understood has a profound impact on our mental health. When we have someone in our life who validates our emotions and listens to us without judgment, it can help us process difficult experiences and move through challenging emotional states. Naming our emotions and having them validated by a loved one supports emotional exposure — the act of sharing what we’re going through with someone who cares. This process helps complete the emotional cycle, reducing stress and enhancing overall emotional well-being.
