2 Coping Skills for Seasonal Depression

As we transition into the fall and winter months, seasonal changes can have a noticeable impact on our mood and mental health. If you’re feeling more fatigued, less motivated, or find it harder to commit to social engagements, you’re not alone. Symptoms of depression can be overwhelming and isolating, but there are ways to manage it effectively. In this post, we’ll explore two powerful approaches for managing depression through behavioral activation and externalizing your depression to regain control over your mental health.

Externalize Your Depression

One of the most impactful ways to manage depression is through externalizing it. This technique, rooted in Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, encourages us to see depression as a separate part of ourselves rather than something that defines us. While you might experience depressive symptoms, it’s important to recognize that you are not your depression.

By externalizing depression, we create space to explore it with curiosity and compassion. Depression may be a part of your experience, but it’s not your identity. Separating yourself from it allows you to take a more empowered and compassionate approach to how you handle its effects on your daily life. This is a key step in managing depression, helping you see the choices available to you from a healthy, balanced place.

Managing Depression Through Behavioral Activation

Another effective strategy is managing depression through behavioral activation. Depression often leads us to want to withdraw, stay in bed, or avoid activities we once enjoyed. Behavioral activation is about taking small, intentional steps to engage in activities—even when you don’t feel like it—because these actions can improve your mental health in the long run.

For example, if your depression makes it hard to get out of bed, behavioral activation encourages you to take a shower, eat a meal, or go for a short walk. These small actions can help you break the cycle of inactivity and low mood. Another example is making a conscious decision to attend a social event, even when isolation feels easier. The act of connecting with others can meet your needs for belonging and support, helping to lift your mood over time.

Offer Yourself Grace

As you practice these techniques—externalizing depression and managing depression through behavioral activation—remember to offer yourself grace. Both strategies require patience, self-compassion, and time. Celebrate small victories, no matter how insignificant they may seem, and know that each step forward is a step toward better mental health.

AFFIRMATION OF THE DAY: “I offer myself kindness and patience as I navigate my journey toward wellness.”

Depression can feel like a heavy burden, but with the right tools and support, you can navigate it. One of my favorite poems about grace is Wild Geese by Mary Oliver. And if you need additional resources or guidance, Anchored Counseling Co. is here to support you on your journey to mental wellness.
